Your FAQ's on Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) Answered

Have you been hearing a lot about Epidermal Growth Factor in skincare lately but you may be asking what are growth factors and how do they benefit my skin?

We've put together a few of your most frequently asked questions to help you understand how growth factors work and what they actually do.

Should I add EGF to my skincare routine?

The answer is a resounding YES! Kate Ryan Skincare is your alternative to mass-marketed products that are seriously lacking in proven, high-quality ingredients. For years, we've been using the protein sh-Oligopeptide-1, more commonly known as epidermal growth factor (EGF), in some of your Kate Ryan favorites - Vitamin C Daytime Repair Serum, Revitalizing Intensive Daily Moisture, Advanced Eye Therapy Complex, and Collagen Booster Intense Repair Serum. As science continues to discover even more about the rejuvenating potential of this hard-working active, we've elevated EGF to its own signature formula.

Starting in our late 20's, skin makes fewer growth factors, resulting in thinner, less supple skin that is prone to wrinkles and sagging. Topical EGF signals cells to act younger and regenerate faster. The result is more collagen, reduction in wrinkles, and firming of lax skin.

Where does EGF come from?

Our EGF is made using 'protein expression' (a laboratory process that has been done for over 30 years). We use synthetic DNA to teach bacteria to make bio-identical EGF.

There are brands on the market that use human-derived growth factors. For many reasons, you will never find a formula at KRS with any human component.

Can EGF be used with Vitamin C?

EGF and Vitamin C work very well together but need a little separation if you are using a Vitamin C product. Many brands of C Serums, especially those with l-ascorbic acid, are formulated at a low pH. The complex ingredients in our EGF Serum can be damaged by the acid. If you are using another brand of C Serum, we recommend waiting at least 15 minutes before applying EGF. EGF and Vitamin C are a perfect duo when used correctly, as both work to replenish collagen.

Can EGF be used with Retinol?

EGF and Retinol are an excellent combination for anti-aging and can be used seamlessly in the same regimen.

Do you recommend using EGF with micro needling?

YES! EGF serum can be used during or post-treatment. Growth factors rev-up collagen synthesis, making it a perfect compliment to micro needling. In addition, applying EGF following chemical peels and laser treatments helps speed the repair and renewal process for better, faster results.

 Is EGF safe in skincare?

Researchers have used EGF for many applications with no indications for safety concerns, especially at the concentrations we use. The use of topical EGF has been studied and there has been no evidence that it can lead to cancer. Some cancers have been linked to mutation in the receptors (EGF itself does not have DNA and cannot mutate). Research into these receptors is ongoing but independent of the topical use of EGF.

EGF and the ingredients we use in our products are designed to accelerate production of new skin cells. Melanoma does not have a receptor for EGF but we do not recommend the use of EGF or any other nutritional product on areas affected by cancer, as "feeding" those cells is not a good idea. If you've had any history of skin cancer, you should have any products (with or without EGF) approved by your doctor or practitioner.

How long will it take to see results?

Used as directed, the beneficial effects of EGF can be perceivable within days. Improvements in lines and wrinkles are often noticed within 1-2 weeks, however, depending on your skin condition, it may take a couple of months to see more dramatic results. Remember that skin cell turnover takes on average 40-50 days and longer as we age. The key is sticking with the regimen! We recommend taking a before and after picture to better visualize your results.

What is a basic recommended regimen using EGF:

AM:

Step 1: Cleanse using a gentle cleanser.

Step 2: Apply Vitamin C Daytime Repair Serum to face, neck and chest.

Step 3: Moisturize with Complete Daily Moisture

PM:

Step 1: Cleanse using a gentle cleanser.

Step 2: Apply EGF Skin Rejuvenation Serum to clean dry skin on face, neck and chest.

Step 3: Apply Total Nutrition Night Repair Complex for retinol and hydration.
